Lot Essay
Across her career, which spans more than four decades, Zarina's work is characterized by a formal austerity. For the artist, process, medium and concept are as integral to the success of an artwork as the final aesthetic. Her pin drawings with their organic surface come to life as the viewer's gaze wanders along the delicate relief formed by the repeated piercings of a sewing needle. The ghostly outlines of grid patterns emerge from the handmade constellation of tiny holes mirroring the artist's quest to map personal memories of various dislocations, both physical and emotional, as well as the ephemeral nature of the concept of home.
Zarina has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including Mind and Matter: Alternative Abstractions from 1940s to Present at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia 1860 - 1989 at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Gouge: The Modern Woodcut at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution, a traveling exhibition organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. A travelling retrospective of her work, Zarina: Paper Like Skin, was held in 2012 - 2013 at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
