Edo period (19th century)
The cylindrical box with pierced sides, inlaid overall in cut iridescent shell with butterflies against a black lacquer ground, the top with peony flowers and branches, hinged door opening to reveal four interlocking shelves with removable circular trays, the sides of which are decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e with pine trees beside flowing streams, nashiji interiors, silvered copper fittings
