在朱新建筆下，無論英雄美人，還是山水花鳥，時而豔麗，時而講究墨色濃淡。作品《放翁寫梅》中藝術家以線條勾勒，筆墨的輕重緩急、幹濕濃淡為心緒的載體，錯落有序，盡顯胸中氣韻。
他對文人畫有自己的定義,“文人畫是通過毛筆把心靈感受的東西表達出來”。近花甲之年，如效仿“一樹梅花一放翁”的孤傲心境般，藝術家引晚唐詩人的詞來傾訴心中的情愫。
