Lot Essay

Sir Hugh Barton CBE (1911-1989) was a former Chairman and Managing Director of Jardine, Matheson & Co. from 1953 to 1963. A graduate of Cambridge University, he joined Jardines in 1933 as a tea taster. He then had several important appointments in Asia including Shanghai and in 1953, he was appointed the taipan of Jardines. From 1955 to 1959 he also served as a Director of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, and from 1962 to 1963, Chairman of the Bank while being the Chairman of Jardines. After retiring in 1963, he became an influential diplomat in Europe, representing the interests of Hong Kong businesses. Sir Hugh Barton was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1966.
Lady Barton was born Rose-Marie Meyer. She was the daughter of Wilhelm Meyer, Founder and Chairman of Anderson Meyer and Co., the sole agent of General Electric in China.
