Lot Essay

Yuan Yuan successfully merges his personal emotions with public consciousness through this work. He is apt at depicting the interior of closed spaces with dilute pigment in a layered manner. Browsing Yuan's works, some of the interior scenes reflect a sense of history or meanings embedded in local cultures, while others represent spaces for practical uses. Yuan introduces a photographic perspective into his paintings, rigorously revealing every subtle detail of the interior of buildings. For example, the walls flaked off or the carpet worn away creates a heavy nostalgic atmosphere, while the empty scene and the source of light imply a kind of temporality and a sense of reality which indicates the events that did occur.
