Lot Essay
This landscape painting by Huang Dan unveils like a Chinese handscroll painting, using a scattered perspective whereby the foreground of the painting seems so realistic, immersing viewers into this alluring spectacle. Whilst gazing at this beautiful scenery, it feels as though one is walking along the shoreline, looking outwards at the mountains across the river from a distance, seeing how massive these mountains stand on the other side of the river. The application of ink in Huang's composition creates a visual illusion that makes parts of mountain hidden behind the cloudy panorama, accentuating the outline of the mountainous background, constructing a profound and sublime riverscape.
The title of the work, Soulmate (Lot 650) seem to highlight the melodious breeze of the painting, as if "the mountains are projecting our thoughts". In our busy lives, there are a lot of temptations and choices, and people come and go - how can we find our soulmates? The use of blue in this painting appears to soothe and pacify the viewers, to let us contemplate and reflect what reality is in the world we live in, one's true self, our true friends, whether they be our close friends, acquaintances, or friends that are separated by distance.
