Lot Essay

These designs for the Byzantine revival, Greek Orthodox cathedral in Bayswater, Central London seem to be presentation drawings intended to be shown to the client for their approval of the scheme. The church foundation stone was laid at the beginning of 1878 and the first liturgy was celebrated on the 1 June 1879. The designs for the interior decoration with the beautiful rendering of the intended polychromatic marble decoration portray to some extent the elaborate decoration that is now apparent and which the reserved exterior does not convey.
