尚揚的藝術創作與中國社會改革以及思潮相互呼應,使他在中國當代藝術史上極具特殊性。改革開放後,個體的自由和解放,伴隨著85思潮在中國催生了藝術家們的“人文熱情”,因而社會需要自由的藝術。一次深入黃河流域的體驗,為尚揚繪畫語言找到了突破。 在洪湖邊及父親的國畫桌邊上長大,從小受到雅致的中國古畫耳濡目染,因而造就尚揚不浮華的藝術風格。色調沿用畫家著名的“尚揚黃”,迷蒙的淡泥黃色基調蘊藏了對陝西地方戲曲“秦腔”以及遼闊地黃土高原的記憶。在滿是冰淩的黃河攤上,畫家乘坐船夫的渡船,用近乎平面的中國書寫方式尋到其獨特畫風,得以將黃土地的質樸和不平凡繪於畫布上。 自古中國人明瞭山水的意義不在於表面景色,而在於情感的寄託,藝術家將五色墨的寫意暈染筆觸,經其之手轉化為油畫的大面積塗色,將對土地 的激情寄託於沉著統一的單色調。以油彩模仿西方拼貼構圖,佈局相容中國簡潔平面架構,觀眾被置於沿岸邊遠眺之河上風景。藝術家精心安排的抽象艘船被引入畫布中央成為視覺焦點,畫圖點睛。魚釣常被古代視為理想的生活方式之一,吳鎮的《蘆灘釣艇圖卷》濕筆染出的陰鬱恰和此畫幅給觀者渾厚沉鬱的朦朧視覺風格相符,此處雖非表達藝術家避世的逸想,但卻將文人雅士隱居的情懷以後現代的表現手法呈現於眼。看似在畫布上的寥寥數筆,體現的是尚揚以新穎的方式琢磨傳統文人畫中畫與文、與人三者間之關係。
