Lot Essay
A Rainy Day (Pippi Longstocking) (Lot 176) is based on the Swedish children' s book of the same title. The unorthodox female protagonist Pipi often ridicules adults for their unreasonable ways. Her courage to challenge social conventions also appears in Yi Hwan-Kwon's works. The exaggerated and distorted figures undermine the traditional concepts of sculptures and create an innovative visual experience. The objects and figures in front of the viewers are distorted and elongated. They cannot help but feel a sense of alienation and ultimately are compelled to adopt the point of view of the artist in order to make sense of the world. By the constantly shifting between the second dimension and the third dimension, Yi Hwan-Kwon electrifies the sculpture and brings out the fascinating aspects of absurdity.
