Lot Essay

Part of a group of drawings of the same dimensions, executed in the same medium of red chalk and pen and brown ink, and all showing on recto and verso studies of centaurs, men on horseback or male nude figures. All with inscriptions 'M.F.' and numbers at the lower right. Two, bearing the numbers '2' and '4', are at the Fogg (for one of them, see A. Mongan and P.J. Sachs, Drawings in the Fogg Museum of Art, Cambridge, Mass., 1946, I, p. 301, no. 571; II, figs. 288-9 (recto and verso). Drawings numbered '5' and '6' were at Sotheby's, London, 11 July 1971, lots 1-2.
