In the present work, Georgia O'Keeffe explores the cottonwood trees common to New Mexico and near her Abiquiu home. The subject was a reoccurring theme in the painter's work, such as in Cottonwoods Near Abiquiu (1950, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico).
