Syrie Maugham was the leading British interior designer of the second quarter of the 20th century. Often celebrated for creating the first all-white room, the current lot is similar to that shown in the apartment of Robert Filmer-Wilson at 17 South Audley Street, London, which she furnished in 1935. Under Maugham's direction, here it was accompanied by the works of other leading designers of the day, including Diego Giacometti, Marion Dorn, Serge Roche and Jean-Michel Frank.
