Lot Essay

On first glance, this watch is immediately attractive. The case presents astounding crispness, extremely unusual for a piece of this age. Additionally, the dial is superb with untouched scales which shine in the deep pitch black gloss dial. The style is a remarkable trait d’union between the minimalistic, nearly military style of timepieces realized from the 1940s onward, and earlier art deco pieces: the dial, featuring simple gilt baton numerals and the sought-after railway divisions, is reminiscent of the former style; the case, with the playful cylindrical decorations to the size of the bow and unusual spherical crown is an obvious nod to the latter.
