Large 2° (476 x 353mm). Parallel text in Italian and Latin. Engraved frontispiece portrait by G. Rossi after P.L. Ghezzi, etched title vignette, 54 engraved and etched plates, 4 double-page, after F. Rostagni and C. Fontana. Extra illustrated with a double-page plate at end. 21 folding letterpress leaves with explanations of the plates. (Frontispiece rather soiled at margins, some worming and light soiling to plate margins, some waterstains on letterpress.) Contemporary half calf and marbled boards (rubbed, some chipping and worming to spine, corners bumped).

FIRST EDITION of ‘the first publication to present engineering solutions for the raising and transportation of building materials … characteristic of the eighteenth-century interest in everything connected with technology’ (Millard). The frontispiece shows Zabaglia in the act of constructing the model of a pulley system. Responsible for designing the machines and scaffolding used in the upkeep of St Peter’s, he is nevertheless thought to have been illiterate. The plates illustrate his own engineering feats with pulleys, winches, scaffolding, platforms, timber frames and trussing, ladders, carts and other machines; in addition, they demonstrate the means of transportation devised by Domenico Fontana for the Vatican obelisk. The accompanying text was prepared by Lelio Cosatti and G.G. Bottari in collaboration with Zabaglia. Berlin Kat. 2755; Brunet V, 1515; Cicognara 968; Millard/Italian 166; RIBA 3733; Riccardi I(ii) 642; Schudt 1126.
