Lot Essay

“Thomas Zipp seeks ever larger thematic correlations in his art…In a special room installation the artist presented pictures and collages as well as sculpture whose motif revolved around the German physicist Otto Hahn. As the inventor of nuclear fission in 1938 (where energy was produced in the form of heat) Hahn was, to a certain extent, the godfather of the atom bomb. Reminiscent of this is the picture shown in Madrid entitled A.B. Inside, 2005, in which a tree is depicted as if it were a mushroom cloud in a virtual space…With this installation Zipp showed a complex scenario of meanings ranging from the “tree of life” to atomic Armageddon….Zipp’s ‘narrative conceptualism’ uses this and other topics with a spontaneous lust for flights of fancy and invention that always open up new realms for his imagination” (Z. Felix, in Thomas Zipp: Achtung! Vision: Samoa, The Family of Pills & The Return of the Surreals, Ostfildern-Ruit, 2005, p. 14)
