Lot Essay

Of the 135 works recorded in the 1888-1892 section of Antoine Salomon and Guy Cogeval's Vuillard catalogue critique volume II, only three works were painted in the oval format, including the present work. All three oval paintings depict women in various positions and settings (figs. 1 and 2), but the present work is the only oval which is intended to be viewed vertically.
