PU RU (1896-1963)
PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF YEH CHIE CHUNG (LOTS 1262-1274)Veteran collector, Mr. Yeh Chie Chung (1948-2008) started his collecting journey since the 1970s and built an impressive collection of Chinese classical and modern paintings. He immersed himself in various fields of research, with a specialty in calligraphy. Important works from Mr. Yeh’s collection have been on loan to the National Museum of History in Taipei and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (formerly known as Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung). A man of bold and generous character, Mr. Yeh was one of the founding members of the Ching Wan Society in Taipei, the world’s most renowned association of Chinese collectors. His friends held him in high esteem.Thirteen lots of Chinese modern paintings will be offered in this sale, plus another fifteen lots (Lots 901 – 915) of classical works to be auctioned in our Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy sale on 27 November 2017.Notably, several works in this collection are dedicated to Pu Ru’s student and friend, Fang Zhenwu. Fang Zhenwu received several Pu Ru’s works when the two were in Taiwan. According to the biography of Pu Ru, Fang secretly helped Pu to sell a lot of his works while storing the proceeds in Fang’s bank account. Pu was also a frequent visitor to Fang’s apartment on Quanzhou Street. As the two held a close relationship, Fang had a large collection of some of Pu Ru’s finest works.—Wang Jiacheng, Pu Xinyu, Chiuko Publishing Co., Taipei, 2002, pp.333-334.
