Lafite 1870 from the wine cellar of the Le Coq Hardi Restaurant in Calais. Bought by the current owner after the closure of the restaurant.

Slightly damaged capsule, bin-soiled and stained label. Level: mid-shoulder.
Tasting note: From the Mid 1970s until the mid 1990s variable, mainly good bottles, from low-shoulder and oxidised to superb. Most recently in Oct. 2004, recorked in 1985, paler in colour, showing its age though drinking well. Very good dry finish. Most recently a magnum, deep, brown-rimmed but alive; spicy, eucalyptus yet not very enticing bouquet; excessively tannic and austere but improved in the glass. Last tasted August 2005. At best ****** MB
