Lot Essay

This intimate image of a bird and persimmons comes from Zhang’s relatively undocumented Argentinian period in Godoy Cruz, Mendoza. As the accompanying exhibition label attests, this work was displayed at the Gimenez Gallery in Godoy Cruz. Records from local newspapers attest that Zhang exhibited twice at this gallery, first in November 1953, and second in February 1954. These newspaper reports document the positive reception of Zhang’s works. In particular, a 1953 report in local newspaper Los Andes News celebrates Zhang’s exhibition as a contribution to the community in which he was living.
