Lampe coupe aux deux figures, um 1950

Zwischen dem Œuvre Alberto Giacomettis und seinen dekorativen Objekten können einige Parallelen erkannt werden. Das Werk Lampe coupe aux deux figures von ca. 1950 ist aus Bronze, dem selben Material, wie auch seine bekannten stehenden Frauenskulpturen der Nachkriegszeit, denen auch die zwei Figuren seitlich der Lampe gleichen. Giacometti erkannte und äusserte sich einst selber sehr erstaunt über die Ähnlichkeit seiner Herangehensweise zu Kunstwerken und funktionalen Objekten: „Mir wurde allmählich klar, dass ich bei einer Vase in exakt der gleichen Weise vorging wie bei einer Skulptur und dass zwischen dem, was ich als Skulptur, und dem was ich als Objekt, als eine Vase bezeichnete, kein Unterschied bestand!“ (Zitiert aus: Toni Stooss, Patrick Elliott, Christoph Doswald, Alberto Giacometti 1901-1066, Ostfildern-Ruit bei Stuttgart 1996, S. 19.)

Some parallels can be drawn between the oeuvre of Alberto Giacometti and his decorative objects. Lampe coupe aux deux figures from around 1950 is made out of bronze, the same material as his well-known standing sculptures of women of the post-war period, who also bear a resemblance to the two figures on the side of the lampe. Giacometti realized and once expressed how surprised he was by the similarity of his approach to works of art and to functional objects: „I began to realize that I approached the making of a vase in exactly the same way as I would the making of a sculpture, and that between what I would describe as a sculpture and what I would describe as an object – a vase – there was no difference!“ (Quoted from: Toni Stooss, Patrick Elliott, Christoph Doswald, Alberto Giacometti 1901-1066, Ostfildern-Ruit near Stuttgart 1996, p. 19.)
