Jean Desprès (1889-1980)Jean Desprès est né en 1889 en Bourgogne. Apprenti dans un atelier parisien d’orfèvrerie, il décide de compléter sa formation par des cours de dessin. Son talent de dessinateur s’illustre dans la création de pièces d’orfèvrerie et de bijoux en argent au style puissant et géométrique fortement inspiré par le cubisme. Ses goûts le portent également vers la couleur et certaines associations insolites puisqu’il n’hésite pas à utiliser dans ses créations onyx, malachite, corail, laque, turquoise et céramique. En 1928, il expose pour la première fois en son nom au salon des Artistes Décorateurs et se fait alors connaître du grand public. Ses créations ont d’ailleurs été collectionnées par certains écrivains, artistes et mécènes tels André Malraux, Paul Signac, Andy Warhol et Jacques Doucet. Jean Desprès was born in 1889 in Burgundy. While he was working as an apprentice in a Parisian goldsmith’s workshop, he decided to complete his training with drawing courses. His talent as a designer is illustrated in the creation of silverware pieces and silver jewellery in a powerful and geometric strong style inspired by cubism. His tastes also bring him to color and some unusual associations since he does not hesitate to use in his creations onyx, malachite, coral, lacquer, turquoise and ceramic. In 1928, he exhibited for the first time under his name at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and made himself known to the general public. His creations have been collected by writers, artists and patrons such as André Malraux, Paul Signac, Andy Warhol and Jacques Doucet.
