Lot Essay

The present wristwatch is a well-preserved representative of an early reference 6240 without the prestigious “Daytona” signature.

In contrast to the later models with different variations of Daytona graphics, the legendary name did not appear on early models such as on the present example. It is furthermore in very attractive, original, unrestored condition, the luminous accents to the indexes has slightly disintegrated but has not been carelessly replaced by a different substance. Enhancing its appeal is the well preserved stainless steel case with the highly coveted MK1 bezel and MK1 screw down pushers, often changed during services.

Reference 6240
Reference 6240 was the first "Oyster Cosmograph" model produced by Rolex. This novelty predominantly was characterized by the screw-down push buttons. Reference 6240 was only in production between 1965 and 1967 during and was replaced by the better known references 6263 and 6265.

Reference 6240 is described and illustrated in Rolex Daytona - A Legend is Born by Carlo Pergola, Stefano Mazzariol, Giovanni Dosso, pp. 76-92, in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda by Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 304-311, and in 100 Superlative Rolex Watches by John Goldberger, p. 239.
