Offered here for the first time at auction, this reference 5004 in rose gold is a particularly exclusive specimen fitted with the most attractive black dial featuring rose gold numerals and white printing. Its desirability is further enhanced by the presence of the original certificate fully confirming that the black dial was mounted by Patek Philippe at the time of manufacture. It is furthermore preserved in excellent overall condition.
Research reveals that, since the launch of reference 5004 in 1994, no more than six examples of this model in rose gold have been seen at international auction with this sought-after black dial version.
Reference 5004
Reference 5004 is considered a modern classic, with features inherited from some of Patek Philippe’s great historic references including the 3970, which was itself based on the legendary reference 2499. However, reference 5004 steps up a gear in terms of complication by boasting the highly complex split seconds function. Reference 5004 is roughly one millimeter larger than reference 3970 and also easily recognizable by its oversized split-seconds pusher in the crown.
Production of reference 5004 began in 1994 and was discontinued in 2009. Patek Philippe replaced it with two other split seconds chronograph models, both in platinum cases: the cushion-shaped reference 5951 released in 2010 with in-house calibre CHR 27-525 PS Q and reference 5204, released in March 2012 at the Basel Fair with in-house calibre CHR 29-535 PS Q.
Reference 5004 is illustrated in: Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 312.
