Lot Essay

This print has previously - but it seems erroneously - been catalogued as a second state-impression. The only different between the equally rare second and third states, according to Godefroy, is an added outline to the right of the jug held by the man seated on the bench. Comparisons with impressions of the second state (Metropolitan Museum, New York) and of the third state (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) show that the present impression is of the third state, with the additional drypoint line added.
