GAETANO GANDOLFI, THREE CROWNED HEADS, PEN AND BROWN INK
Many of Gandolfi's pen head studies, baptised 'capricci di teste' by Donatella Biagi ('Gaetano Gandolfi's Capricci of Heads: Drawings and Engravings', The Burlington Magazine, CXXXVI, 1994, pp. 375-380), were made into prints by the Bolognese etcher Luigi Tadolini (1758-1823). Twenty of them were published in the Raccolta di teste pittoriche inventate e disegnate a penna dal Sig. G. Gandolfi around 1785 and there is a copy previously owned by Jacques Doucet in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (inv. 4 RES 57; op. cit., pp.376-377, ill.).
Although the present drawing cannot be related to a print, it was most likely intended for the market.

De nombreuses études de têtes à la plume, baptisées ‘capricci di teste’ par Donatella Biagi (‘Gaetano Gandolfi’s Capricci of Heads: Drawings and Engravings’, The Burlington Magazine, CXXXVI, 1994, pp. 375-380), furent gravées par le bolognais Luigi Tadolini (1758-1823). Vingt d’entre elles furent publiées en 1785 dans le recueil Raccolta di teste pittoriche inventate e disegnate a penna dal Sig. G. Gandolfi dont il existe un exemplaire dans les collections Jacques Doucet de la Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (inv. 4 RES 57; op. cit., pp.376-377, ill.).
Bien que ces trois têtes couronnées ne puissent être directement mises en rapport avec une de ces incisions, il est très probable qu’elles aient également été produites à des fins commerciales.
