VICTOR-MARIE HUGO, CHURCH ON A ROCK, GRAPHITE, STUMP, DEDICATED AND SIGNED

In the present drawing, the use of graphite, blurred in the background and reworked by gumming effects, appears more seldom than the brown ink technique common to Victor Hugo's landscapes. Nevertheless, two comparable drawings are preserved in the Maison Victor Hugo: Château fort and Souvenir d'Anvers: ville au bord de l'eau, dated 1854. The same misty atmosphere, a dark and grey mass accentuated with graphite in the background, surrounds the structures (inv. 914, inv. 156; Du Chaos dans le pinceau... Victor Hugo. Dans le présent dessin, l’utilisation du graphite, estompé à l’arrière-plan et retravaillé par effet de gommage, est plus rare que l’encre brune dans les paysages de Victor Hugo. Néanmoins, deux dessins comparables sont conservés à la Maison Victor Hugo : Château fort et le Souvenir d’Anvers : ville au bord de l’eau, daté 1854. La même atmosphère brumeuse, cette masse sombre et grise traité au graphite à l’arrière-plan entoure les architectures (inv. 914, inv. 156 ; Du Chaos dans le pinceau… Victor Hugo. Dessins, cat. exp., Paris, Maison Victor Hugo, 2000, n° 63 ; G. Audinet, Victor Hugo. Dessins. Collection des Maisons de Victor Hugo. Paris/Guernesey, Paris, 2021, n° 126).
