Monte Bello was one of the wines, at the 1976 Judgement of Paris, that beat French First Growths into second place. In 1886, high in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the first Monte Bello vineyards were planted. A first vintage from the young vines followed in 1892. During Prohibition (1920-1933), the vineyard was not fully maintained; some vines survived into the late 1930’s, but by the 1940’s they were effectively abandoned. Eight acres of Cabernet Sauvignon were replanted in 1949. These were the source of the first Ridge Monte Bello (1962) and subsequent vintages until 1974. It is now harvested from four old ranch vineyards on the Monte Bello Ridge, Perrone Ranch (fruit from the 1971 harvest onwards), Torre Ranch (Dave Bennison produced from here 1962-1968, before Paul Draper took over in 1969), Rousten Ranch (added 2007) and Klein (Jimsomare) Ranch (added 1978). Since 1975 it has been a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend, with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in support. The vineyards harvested for Monte Bello are at a soaring 800 metres. Prior to 1975 it was solely Cabernet Sauvignon.
