Lot Essay

This model is the subject of a number of drawings by Gwen John which were all done at much the same time. Whilst the identity of the sitter has never been established, it is probable that she is Maude Boughton-Leigh. Maude Boughton-Leigh (c.1881- 1945), called Grilda, was a friend of John in Paris and was herself an artist. Her sister Chloë was also the subject of several paintings and drawings by the artist.

We are very grateful to Cecily Langdale for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
