JEAN-BAPTISTE PILLEMENT, LANDSCAPE WITH A SHEPHERD AND HIS ANIMALS, SIGNED AND DATED, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED
A great traveller, Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808) left his native Lyon at a very young age to continue his training at the Gobelins factory in Paris. At the age of seventeen, he left for Spain and Portugal, where he refused the title of Painter to the King. His numerous commissions later took him to Poland and the court of King Stanislas II (1732-1798), to London, where he exhibited at the Society of Artists and the Free Society of Artists, and to Vienna, where he worked for the Prince of Lichtenstein, before finally returning to Paris.
