Although no painting of this subject by Bouguereau is known, it is very probable that this sketch illustrates the theme inspired by Greek and Roman mythology of Jupiter as a child, hidden by his mother Cybele and fed by the goat Amalthea, in order to escape his father Saturn on Mount Ida in Crete.
