Lot Essay

The stamps on the verso of this photograph have been identified as M9 and M30 in Steven Manford’s book, Behind the photo: the stamps of Man Ray (2009). According to Manford, M9 is a lifetime Val de Grâce stamp used from 1935 to 1937 (p. 21) and M30 is a posthumous copyright stamp “numerous photographs sold by Juliet and from the Trust carry an ADAGP stamp” (p. 37).
