Lot Essay

Sold with a dendrochronology analysis, John Topham, Redhill, September 30, 2006

The dendrochronology analysis by John Topham concludes that the youngest ring on the bass side dates to 1733 and on the treble side to 1730. In his report Topham writes, Both sides significantly cross-match sequences taken from a great many instruments made by classical Italian makers. However, the bass side most significantly cross-matches all six sequences taken from three cellos in the database, one by Domenico Montagnana dated 1737, one by Nicolo Gagliano dated 1750 and a third by Santus Serafin dated 1746.
