Lot Essay

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF ASTON MARTIN

Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford and has been acknowledged ever since as an iconic global brand, synonymous with style, luxury and performance and with a unique British heritage. Lionel Martin believed that an Aston Martin must be “a quality car of good performance and appearance. A car for the discerning owner driver with fast touring in mind, designed, developed, engineered and built as an individual”. This philosophy has led to the creation of some of Britain’s most archetypal sports cars.

The historic brand celebrated its 100th birthday by producing just 100 exclusive centenary specification examples of each of its model lines: the V8 Vantage, DB9, Rapide and Vanquish. Considered a British cultural icon, Aston Martin has held a Royal Warrant for supplying cars to the Prince of Wales since 1982.

JAMES BOND AND ASTON MARTIN: AN ICONIC RELATIONSHIP

Aston Martin has been associated with the James Bond franchise for over 50 years, with the DB5 first appearing in Goldfinger in 1964, the first of five distinct Aston Martin models to be featured on screen. An Aston Martin has highlighted 11 Bond films, including all four starring Daniel Craig.

Craig as James Bond drives an Aston Martin DBS, the successor of the Vanquish, in his debut in Casino Royale and in Quantum of Solace. The original DBS was first produced from 1967-1972 and featured in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in 1969. In Skyfall the 1960s DB5 reappeared, paying homage to Goldfinger nearly fifty years later. The DB5 continues to be celebrated as one of the most iconic cars ever produced. In 2012’s Spectre Daniel Craig as James Bond drives a DB10 which was engineered and hand crafted exclusively for use in the film. The only DB10 made available for purchase, it was sold for charity as a collector’s item at Christie’s in London 2012 for £2.6 million The proceeds were donated to Medecins Sans Frontieres, continuing Cubby Broccoli’s philosophy of "giving something back". It is hard to imagine James Bond behind the wheel of anything but an Aston Martin.

DANIEL CRAIG AND JAMES BOND

Since the 1962 release of Dr. No, the first film production of Ian Fleming’s renowned novels, the portrayal of James Bond has inspired millions. There are few characters in either literature or film that instantly evoke sophistication, charm and intelligence, as Bond does. Actor Daniel Craig has played James Bond in four films: Casino Royale in 2006, Quantum of Solace in 2008, Skyfall in 2012 and Spectre in 2016. He has explored the character’s interior life perhaps more than any other actor to play the role.

Daniel Craig is hailed as one of the finest actors of his generation on stage, screen and television. He trained at the National Youth Theatre and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He began his career on the stage before transitioning to film. At the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, during the the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Craig made a guest appearance as James Bond alongside Queen Elizabeth II. He is due to take on the role for a fifth time, continuing the work of the global phenomenon that is British Secret Service Agent 007, Mr. James Bond, in Bond 25, due to be released in 2019.
