Château Cheval-Blanc 1921
Saint-Émilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)
Chateau bottled. Two scuffed capsules. Four corroded capsules. Badly bin-soiled and fading labels. One label with vintage illegible. Levels: four top-shoulder, one mid/upper-shoulder and one mid/low-shoulder
Tasting note: An exceptional decade. 1921 was a unique vintage with one of the earliest harvests since 1893. The very hot summer caused challenges in vinifying the wines.
The most amazing wine from the 20s with deservedly the same reputation as the legendary 1947. Harvest started on 19 September and was finished on the 5th October. Only 531 hl was produced. The alcohol level was a quite high 14.2%, reflecting the ripeness of the grapes. Only the 1929 and 1947 would be slightly higher, respectively 14.6% & 14.4%. Then it would take well into the 2000s to have a Cheval Blanc with this level of alcohol. Chateau bottled with top-shoulder level. The natural conditions of the old Swiss cellar had kept this bottle in fantastic condition. Clear light orange with heavy sediment attached to side of the bottle. When I opened this bottle just before dinner the wine wasn’t giving much expression, clearly needing time to fully open up. Two hours after the wine was served to accompany a fine tender beef dish and showed its superb quality. Expressive fragrant nose resembling a fine old vintage port. Dried fruits, old wood and smoky bacon notes presented itself from the glass. Very attractive and rich.
The beautiful widening broad taste showed lots of strength in same Port strength yet finishing superbly dry. In this way there is a direct resemblance to the 47, which also has this Port like intensity. After a century the 1921 is still in fabulous strength and what a power. Broad and just so superbly textured. Very stable in the glass too, not showing decline at all for two hours. A great classic up there next to the 1947. Extremely rare nowadays. Fantastic legendary wine. March 2021. Edwin Vos.
