Lot Essay

In 1978 Smart had settled with Ermes De Zan at Posticcia Nuova, Tuscany where the present work was painted. North Sydney recalls Copper Park I, 1962 (Private collection) and The Listener, 1965 (Ballarat Art Gallery) -- the lone male figure reclining on a grassy slope, an urban landscape rising behind him.

'Many visual themes found in early paintings reoccur in recent ones; an image gains rather than fades in every subsequent interpretation, the patina of previous associations enriching each new approach.' (P. Quartermaine, Jeffrey Smart, 1983, p.51)
