MAISON PERRIER-JOUËT
Maison Perrier-Jouët was originally founded by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët just a year after their wedding in 1811. Pierre-Nicolas was a botanist and vintner, whilst Rose-Adélaïde came from a Norman merchant family with a cultured background. Born of the couple's equal love for nature and the arts, Perrier-Jouët embodies their strong desire to make a Champagne House with a difference. Key to the Champagne itself is its distinctive style including the bold but triumphant decision to base the Champagne on the Chardonnay grape, which in fact gives Perrier-Jouët its internationally recognised floral and elegant style. In line with this grape choice alongside the family’s search for Champagne excellence, the Perrier-Jouët plots are situated on the Côte des Blancs, in the heart of Champagne’s “Golden Triangle”, as an ideal location to nurture and grow the Chardonnay grapes.
As the house started to expand, shipments began to Great Britain in 1815 and to the United States in 1837. Further, the 1842 vintage marked the creation of the first Perrier-Jouët Brut Champagne, Cuvée K. Crucially though, in spite of its expansion and growing popularity globally, the family’s creative philosophy and core values have prevailed throughout generations, starting with the founding couples’ son Charles Perrier. Owing to this, the Champagne house has a strong connection with the Art Nouveau movement, whose central ethos involved the reinvention of nature to bring alive the everyday. This relationship is reflected well by the signature Japanese anemones that adorn the bottles of Perrier-Jouët Cuvée Belle Epoque. These sinuous forms were created by Emile Gallé, one of the pioneers of the Art Nouveau movement in 1902 as the Champagne house’s illustration. After the death of Charles Perrier, Henri and Octave Gallice became the directors of the Champagne house. Whilst Henri managed the family business from Épernay, Octave spent much more time in Paris, where he met Emile Gallé, whom he commissioned for the floral Champagne house emblem. This affinity with the Art Nouveau movement has remained strong throughout the years, culminating in the 1991 opening of Perrier-Jouët’s Maison Belle Epoque.
In over 200 years, Perrier-Jouët has seen only eight Cellar Masters, each trained by their predecessor to ensure that the distinctive style is preserved. The current Cellar Master, Séverine Frerson is the first woman to hold the position in the history of the House.
Rarities Direct from the Cellars of Maison Perrier-Jouët
This spectacular sale of finest and rarest vintage Champagnes direct from the cellars of Maison Perrier-Jouët incorporates 147 bottles in total, including rare magnums and jeroboams and is viewed as a tribute to the wine legacy of Maison Perrier-Jouët. It includes treasures from the Eden cellar, said to house the most precious of wines in the world. This selection was handpicked by Séverine Frerson from the Oenothèque Perrier-Jouët.
The top lot of this collection is one bottle of the 1874 vintage. Previously sold in 1888 at Christie’s in London, this Brut set the longstanding benchmark for the most expensive Champagne ever sold at auction from 1888 right up until 1967. 1874 was an outstanding vintage which created huge interest in the wines from Champagne during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This wine was blended by Charles Perrier (son of the founders of the Maison), and is formed of the exquisite Chardonnay grapes from Cramant, one of the Maison’s original and most prestigious vineyards. The current Cellar Master has named this bottle ‘a testament to the heritage of the House’. The buyer will be able to open this bottle at the Maison Belle Epoque in Épernay, France. The bottle is offered alongside a bespoke VIP experience, including a night at the Maison for up to 10 guests, a guided tour of the cellars and the House which showcases one of the largest private collections of French Art Nouveau in Europe. Further, a tasting of the full range of current Perrier-Jouët cuvées and the 1874 vintage with Cellar Master Séverine Frerson is included, as well as a gastronomic meal prepared by three Michelin starred chef Pierre Gagnaire with Champagne pairings from the Oenothéque Perrier-Jouët. This exceedingly rare 1874 Brut and its accompanying exclusive experience are estimated at a total of £10,000-£15,000.
In addition, the collection offered for sale includes individual bottles of the Perrier-Jouët Brut Millésimé 1964 vintage created by the sixth Cellar Master André Baveret at the dawn of his almost 30-year tenure. There are also magnums of the 1976 and 1979 Perrier-Jouët Blason de France, both distinctive cuvées in their own right and emblematic of the Maison Perrier-Jouët throughout the Sixties and Seventies. Further, included are magnums of the 1979 and 1982 Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Brut as well as magnums of the 1999 vintage and rare jeroboams of the 2000 vintage.
Encompassing a trilogy of magnums of Perrier-Jouët Epoque cuvées of the vintages 1988, 1989 and 1990, these are three outstanding vintages producing exceptional and long-lived champagnes. This trilogy has been described as a rarity in Champagne, with the cuvées having been blended by André Baveret with the assistance of Hervé Deschamps, who succeeded him in 1993.
Of more recent vintages on offer, there are bottles of the 2002 Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs, bottles of 2004 Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Brut and 2004 Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé and finally bottles of 2006 Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé.
