MEZCALA ANDESITE FIGURE, TYPE M12

The seated figure distinguished by a harmonious reduction of the body into deep diagonal, horizontal and vertical grooves, the strong jaw thrust forward with prominently raised brows.

The Seated Mezcala figures particularly categorized as M8 are distinguished by the use of fragmented forms reduced into geometric components. The sculptural minimalism of type M12 sculptures can be seen centuries later in artistic vocabulary of analytical and synthetic Cubism with its use of overlapping, dissected planes.

Le personnage est représenté assis avec un corps aux proportions réduites et harmonieuses soulignées par des bandes horizontales et verticales profondément incisées et une tête à la mâchoire nettement projetée en avant avec des sourcils proéminents.

Les personnages assis Mezcala qui sont catégorisés comme Type M8 se distinguent par un traitement compartimenté des volumes qui sont représentés sous leur aspect géométrique le plus poussé, et l’on peut retrouver ce minimalisme de style plusieurs siècles après dans la réduction synthétique de l’art cubiste.
