À l’apogée de sa carrière, Marc Chagall exécute cette belle gouache Le couple au traineau à Sils, datée 1961. Le peintre semble avoir arrêté le temps à l’instant le plus heureux où un couple d’amoureux (ou de fiancés) partage un moment de tendresse. Cette oeuvre reprend l’un des thèmes de prédilection de l’artiste: l’utopie de l’amour terrestre et céleste, entre réalité et songe. L’organisation sophistiquée de l’espace apporte un rythme puissant à cette composition: un couple fottant au centre, les lignes des épaules et des bras du couple séparant harmonieusement la feuille; un décor de maisons et de montagnes enneigées ainsi qu’un homme au traineau, apportent romantisme et légèreté à l’image. Notons également la maestria du choix et de l’utilisation des couleurs qui viennent adoucir l’ensemble de la composition. Chagall décide d’ajouter un ravissant bouquet de feurs comme pour souligner le romantisme de la scène. Dans le lexique du peintre, les fleurs sont l’un de ses grands leitmotivs. En efet, en 1950, Chagall achète
une propriété sur la route de Vence, près de Nice, et se voit profondément émerveillé par l’abondance de feurs. La représentation des feurs devient pour lui une manière de rendre hommage aux maîtres tels que Fantin-Latour, Renoir, Monet et Matisse qu’il admire tant.
At the height of his career, Marc Chagall painted the present gouache Le couple au traineau à Sils, dated 1961. The painter seems to have halted time at the happy moment when a couple of lovers (or fiancés) share a moment of tenderness. The subject of this work is one of the artist’s favourites: the utopia of earthly and heavenly love, between dream and reality. The sophisticated organisation of space gives this composition a powerful rhythm: a couple floating in the centre of the composition and the lines formed by their shoulders and arms dividing the sheet; a background of houses and snow-capped mountains and a man with a sledge bring romanticism to the image. The masterful choice and use of colours brings great softness to the entire composition. Chagall decided to add a very beautiful bunch of flowers as if to crown the purity of this love. Flowers are an important leitmotiv in the artist’s work. In 1950, Chagall bought a house on the road to Vence, near Nice and was struck by the abundance of flowers. Painting flowers became a way for him to pay tribute to the masters he admired, such as Fantin-Latour, Renoir, Monet or Matisse.
