Leopoldo Janesich opened his first jewellery and silverware shop in Trieste in 1835. By the early twentieth century, the firm was selling from Paris, London and Monte Carlo to an international clientele that recognised the name as pre-eminent makers of jewellery and compacts. Strauss, Allard et Meyer, Place des Vosges, were one of the most successful of the Parisian Art Deco workshops, specialising in vanity cases, many of which were in the 'chinoiserie style', commissioned by such firms as Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and Lacloche.
