INTERNATIONAL STYLE GOLD DOUBLE-HEADED EFFIGY PENDANT
The densely cast mythical composite animal with narrow, curved body, legs tightly bent, each upright snarling head trimmed by braidwork, with large snouts baring incised teeth, half-closed coffee-bean eyes and adorned with prominent ear ornaments, the outstretched talons supporting suspension loops.
The International style is distinguished from later Panamanian gold works by an emphasis on simplicity, smooth silken surfaces with minimal, additive details. Such double-bodied creatures are related to concepts of regeneration and duality. For a similar double-bodied pendant, see Seligman and Berrin, 1982: no. 111.
