Lot Essay

This table form was used in the cabaret of the Imperial Hotel, Wright's seminal commission in Tokyo. Long fascinated by Japanese art, Wright devoted several years to the construction of the building and the design of all aspects of the interiors. The hotel was one of the few buildings to survive a massive earthquake in 1923, but was later demolished in 1968. cf. Western Architect, Vol. XXXII, April 1923, pl. 12, for a period photo of the cabaret illustrating these tables.
