Lot Essay

Colonel Fitzgerald of Ballinaparka, County Waterford and Newcastle, County Tipperary, was born in 1737. He sailed as ensign in the Royal George in 1759, aged 21, before being promoted Lieutenant of the Madras Infantry in 1759, then Captain in 1763 and Major in 1766. He was present at the siege of Madura in 1764 and was wounded; he retired in 1770.
