Lot Essay

With Rolex presentation box.

Rolex has produced only very limited numbers of Cosmograph watches set with precious stones and they were all aimed at very exclusive clients. Never before seen at auction, the present example of reference 6270 is an extremely exclusive model manufactured by Rolex as it is only one of three examples known from the market to date. Even rarer than its already extremely rare "sister" model, the ref. 6269 that was produced during the same period, 1984-1986, only 5 examples of ref. 6270, with a specially decorated case, are known to date to have been made for the Sultan of Oman. This piece is so rare that one can hardly find any documentation or literature devoted to it.

Stamped 6270 between the lugs, the case is actually a reference 6263 as mentioned inside the case back whereby the bezel was actually changed to a baguette cut diamond set version. In addition, the paved dial was embellished with diamonds as well as sapphires for the numerals.

The combination of yellow gold and diamond setting results in an impressive watch with a great shine that will catch attention to the person wearing it. The dial in itself is a great achievement due to its homogeneous design, enhanced through the darker colour of the sapphire numerals and the beautiful dark blue subsidiary dials that shine through a deep blue iridescence. The Rolex signature that was inserted onto brushed gold bars emphasizes the overall buoyancy of this stand alone watch.

Consigned by a prominent collector, the present watch was very well preserved and cared for as such a piece deserves. The slight oxidation that has appeared on the watch is a testament to the extra care that it received during its lifetime and is, overall, in excellent condition with only a very light mark on the caseback. The watch will play a predominant role in raising the value of a well curated collection and will become the masterpiece in its future collection. It will provide its owner with great pride to own such a treasure. This is one occasion in a collector's life that should not be missed as one will not see another example such as this for decades.
