Lot Essay
The decoration on this slop-bowl is very unusual in that it combines a chinoiserie figure on the interior with both European subject matter and Eastern elements on the exterior. The processional elephant on one side is based on sheet 33 of Höroldt's sketchbook, known as the Schulz Codex, illustrated left. The palace interior depicted on the other side would appear to be inspired by contemporary baroque architecture, although no specific source has been identified.
A teapot and cover painted in a very similar hand, with a scene of figures and a camel on a quayside before a ship on the water within a cartouche of the same design as those on the present lot was sold at Sotheby's, Geneva on 12 November 1984, lot 157; the coffee-pot and cover, probably from the same service was sold at Sotheby's in London on 7 December 1971, lot 201.
