Greek cross with central Bavarian coat of arms, in gold and silver gilt, in fitted case (star deficient), with three interesting documents dated 1838, extremely fine and rare
Maltese Cross including suspension loop;12 cm. high
Provenance
Awarded to Charles John Canning, 1st Earl Canning (1812-1862) in 1838;
and by descent to his nephew, Hubert George de Burgh-Canning, 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde (1832-1916),
by whom bequeathed to his great-nephew, Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood (1882- 1947), and by descent at Harewood House, Yorkshire.

Letter of commendation signed by Othon, King Otho of Greece, dated 14/26 November 1838 (second date denotes the Gregorian calendar) 3. Letter of gratitude to Le Vicomte Charles J. Canning, signed by C.Zographos (Konstantinos Zografos), dated the same as above. The letter also acknowledges the service that Lord Canning’s father gave to Greece in its struggle for Independence.
