Oblong, on four acanthus scroll feet, anthemions and shell border, the cover with coronet finial hinging to reveal a quilted satin interior, the sides applied with monogram 'ML', the front with the enamelled coat-of-arms of the City of London, the reverse engraved with presentation inscription, marked on side and base
7 in. (18 cm.) high; 11 ¼ in. (28.5 cm.) wide; 7 ¼ in. (18.5 cm.) deep
gross weight 48 oz. (1,496 gr.)
The monogram 'ML' is for H.R.H. Princess Mary, Princess Royal and later Countess of Harewood (1897-1965) and her husband Viscount Lascelles, later 6th Earl of Harewood (1882-1847).
The inscription reads 'Corporation of the City of London. / Presented / With an Address of Congratulation / to / Her Royal Highness Princess Mary / and / Viscount Lascelles, D.S.O. / On Their Marriage / Guildhall.E.6. / 22nd February, 1922.'.
Provenance
A wedding present from the Corporation of the City of London to H.R.H. The Princess Mary (1897-1965) and Viscount Lascelles, later 6th Earl of Harewood (1882-1947), February 1922 and by descent at Harewood House, Yorkshire.
