Lot Essay

Harold Gilman's sister Irene (d. 1946) married the Rev. Harold Battiscombe, who served as the Governor of H.M.P Parkhurst, Isle of Wight. The present lot was used as the front cover of the Wordsworth Classics 1994 edition of George and Weedon Grossmith's Diary of a Nobody.
