Cette oeuvre provient de la succession de Leonard D. Hamilton (1921-2019), un collectionneur d’art passionné, qui a grandi à Manchester (Angleterre), où il a été inscrit au Balliol College (Oxford) et au Kings College (Cambridge), puis déménagé aux États-Unis en 1949. Il a travaillé comme chercheur médical pendant le reste du siècle. Sa collaboration transatlantique avec Maurice Wilkins a considérablement contribué à la découverte de la structure de l'ADN, pour laquelle Watson, Crick et Wilkins ont reçu le prix Nobel. "Et quelques jours plus tard, mon ami Leonard Hamilton (un autre passionné d’art), qui travaillait pour le Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute à New York, nous a envoyé un ADN humain d’excellente qualité depuis son laboratoire. Leonard allait devenir notre principal fournisseur d'ADN."
De son vivant, M. Hamilton a également rencontré et s'est lié d'amitié avec de nombreux artistes de renom et ainsi constitué une collection comprenant notamment des œuvres de Lowry, Portinari, Krajcberg, Mabe, Hodgkins, Stamos, Epstein, Thornton, Whistler, Matisse, Masson, Wood, Sickert, Picasso, Bonnard, Blackwood, Corinth et bien d'autres. Il a passé le dernier demi-siècle de sa vie dans une maison primée conçue par les architectes Julian et Barbara Neski dans le but de mettre en valeur son art.
Le Belier d’Alechinsky a été acquis de l’artiste par l’intermédiaire de la Lefebre Gallery à New York en 1967. L'oeuvre fut installé dans l'entrtée de la maison du Dr Hamilton où elle avait trouvé une merveilleuse place.
The painting is from the estate of Leonard D. Hamilton (1921-2019), an avid art collector, who grew up in Manchester, England, matriculated Balliol College, Oxford, and Kings College, Cambridge, moved to the United States in 1949 and worked as a medical researcher for the rest of the century. His trans-Atlantic collaboration with Maurice Wilkins contributed significantly to the discovery of the structure of DNA, for which Watson, Crick and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize. "And just a few days later, my friend Leonard Hamilton (another art enthusiast) who worked at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in New York, sent us excellent quality human DNA from his lab. Leonard was to become our main supplier of DNA."
During Dr. Hamilton’s lifetime, he also met and befriended a number of leading artists and assembled a collection that included works of Lowry, Portinari, Krajcberg, Mabe, Hodgkins, Stamos, Epstein, Thornton, Whistler, Matisse, Masson, Wood, Sickert, Picasso, Bonnard, Blackwood, Corinth and others. He spent the last half century of his life in an award-winning house designed by architects Julian and Barbara Neski with an eye to showcasing his art.
Alechinsky’s Le Belier was acquired from the artist through the Lefebre Gallery in New York City in 1967 and installed to provide a dramatic backdrop that was seen upon entrance to Dr. Hamilton’s house.
