MEZCALA STONE FIGURE, TYPE M14

Of broad and flattened form with distinctive openwork arms, hands placed flatly on the waist, the wide facial plane with deeply recessed mouth, demarcated brow ridge and ear flanges.

There are comparatively few recorded M14 figures, accounting for only 5 percent of the total number of representations of human figures. The M14 type have the diagnostic trait of a significant space between the arms and the bodies. According to Carlo Gay, they possess “a dramatic conceptual and technical advancement in the ongoing attempt to achieve a viable human figure in stone" (Gay and Pratt 1992: p. 67).

Lot Essay

Personnage représenté avec des proportions massives et aplaties, les bras séparés du corps, les mains placées fermement sur la taille, des traits de visages bien marqués avec une bouche nettement en creux, des arcades sourcilières affirmées et aux oreilles rabattues sur les bords.

Les personnages de type M14 sont peu nombreux dans le corpus des productions Mezcala et correspondent à seulement cinq pour cent des représentations humaines. Le groupe M14 se caractérise par un espace nettement représenté entre les bras et le corps et selon Carlo Gay « par des progrès techniques et conceptuels spectaculaires dans la volonté d’un rendu réaliste d’une représentation humaine faite en pierre » (Gay et Pratt, 1992 : p. 67).
