Tasting Notes:
1978 *****
"A very good vintage, the best between 1971 and 1985. An unpromising start, the spring and the first half of the summer being cold, retarding initial growth, flowering and development. From Aug 20 the weather changed and, as in Bordeaux, a sustained period of sunshine saved the harvest, ripening the grapes in time for a late harvest, around Oct 11.
Despite an imbalance of climate, the wines are well balanced. Better, in my opinion, than Bordeaux: and the top wines should develop further and last well." MB

Romanée-Conti
"First tasted at the Domaine in May 1983, two bottles, one at cellar temperature. Fairly deep; harmonious but restrained, with a curious dusty character but underlying foundation of fruit. A massively constructed wine. Rich. Firm. Deceptively advanced for its age. Length and excellent acidity. The cooler bottle seemed to have more vanillin on the nose, drier and spicy. Two years later: deep my Burgundian standards. Makes La Tache seem fully mature. A great bouquet, slightly earthy, vegetal, rich, tangy, packed with fruit. Magnificent but unready. Complete. Fragrant but needing at least 10 years more bottle age." Last note April 1985 ***(**) MB

La Tâche
"Aged three a lively purple robe; nose already opulent; masses of fruit, rich yet elegant. Excellent potential. Two bottle in May 1983, nose fragrant, scented but still a but hard.; shapely, slender, flowery but firm. Good tannin and acidity. A lovely wine. Last tasted May 1983." Echezeaux DRC
"Ruby, cherry red; rich, plummy; earth and fruit aroma, broad and immediate appeal; dry, fullish, firm, slightly bitter tannins but fragrant and lingering." **(*) MB

Grands-Echezeaux DRC
Fairly deep and plummy; fragrant, refined, lovely fruit; fabulously entry and mid-palate. Mouthfilling flavor, firm, great length and future." **(***) MB

Richebourg DRC
"Medium-deep, plummy, intense; a broad-based nose, excellent foundation of rich, prune-like fruit; mouthfilling, all the component parts on a massive scale." (****) MB

Romanée-St-Vivant DRC
"Fairly deep and plummy; fragrant, refined, lovely fruit; fabulously sweet entry and mid-palate. Mouthfilling flavor, firm, great length and future." **(***) MB
